Abstract
Neuronal activity patterns associated with stable percepts, memories, and behaviors are known to change over time, even under stable environmental and behavioral conditions. This phenomenon, known as representational drift, raises a fundamental question: how can neural circuits remain stable enough to support reliable behavior while their underlying activity continues to reorganize? In this talk, I will discuss computational and theoretical approaches to this question, focusing on representational geometry and low-dimensional neural manifolds as a bridge between stability and plasticity. I will present recent work showing that random high-dimensional network structure can preserve manifold geometry despite ongoing activity drift, and outline how this framework may help explain the emergence and stability of neural representations across learning and behavior.
