Abstract: Memories are believed to be formed within the context of the hippocampal “cognitive map” of the environment whereby the representation of a novel object or event is incorporated into the hippocampal representation of the spatio-temporal context. Sampling of sensory information is shaped by the patterns of animal exploratory behaviour, while internal processing and transfer of the information is organized by oscillatory network dynamics in cortico-hippocampal circuits. However, the functional role of these behavioural patterns and their relationship to the formation of hippocampal representations are not known. Furthermore, functional role of rich oscillatory network dynamics in hippocampal region in the formation hippocampal representation is not established. To close these gaps we combine high resolution analysis of rat biological motion and multiregional multichannel extracellular recordings in behaving rats. I will present new results towards the link between rat exploratory behavior, oscillatory network dynamics and spatial representation in hippocampus. | |
