Abstract
Cortical layer 6 cells have sub-cortical projections to thalamus and the thalamic reticular nucleus, as well as intracortical projections to both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. All of these projections are somehow involved in modulation of sensory inputs, and how the neurons in these circuits work in synergy is an area of intense research. The myriad of genetic tools that have become available, including expression of light-sensitive proteins in specific cell types, has made it possible to control the activity in a specific population of cells. The cell specific labeling has also facilitated a comparison of the function of neuron types in different brain areas. Using such tools I will report on our research on how L6 cells contribute both to control of sensory adaptation in thalamus, and to regulation of cortical excitability.
