Abstract: A novel method of chronic optical imaging based on new voltage-sensitive dyes was developed to facilitate the explorations of the spatial and temporal patterns underlying higher cognitive functions in the neocortex of behaving monkeys. Using this system we were able to explore cortical dynamics, with high spatial and temporal resolution, over period of up to 1 year from the same patch of cortex. Dynamics of functional maps and retinotopic responses were explored in primary visual areas, as well as the responses to saccadic eye movements. In the motor cortical areas we studied intra- and intercortical connectivity revealed by microstimulation and the cortical correlates of the Go/NoGo behavioral paradigm.
