BrainLinks – BrainTools : A research proposal by the University of Freiburg on hybrid brain-machine interface systems has been invited to enter the second round of the Excellence Initiative.

02.03.2011: On March 2, 2011, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Council of Science and Humanities presented the names of institutions that may enter a full proposal for the second round of the Excellence Initiative. With the Excellence Initiative, the Federal Government and the federate states support outstanding research at universities in Germany.

In addition to the three institutions in Freiburg that were successful in 2007 during the first round (BIOSS, SGBM, and FRIAS), one new proposal by the university was able to compete against strong competition. The research initiative BrainLinks – BrainTools was invited to enter the next round and submit a full proposal. The established excellence institutions will submit follow-up proposals.

BrainLinks – BrainTools aims to raise the bi-directional interaction between technical instruments and the brain to an unprecedented level, by developing flexible yet stable and adaptive yet robust applications of hybrid brain-machine interface systems based on neuronal signals.

The initiative combines advances in microsystems engineering, computer science, neuroscience, and neurotechnology, by exploiting in particular the activity of the brain at the mesoscopic level to control implanted and external systems, such as neuroprostheses and brain machine interfaces. The Bernstein Center Freiburg is proud to be an active participant in this ambitious endeavor.
