Third Place in National Health Science Slam: On November 8, Bernstein Center PhD student Sarah Jarvis participated in the national finals in a "Science Slam" dedicated to health research and won third place.

24.11.2011: "From a kick to a bang: Putting together the Big Brain Theory" – with this topic Sarah won over the audience and came third in the national finals of the "Science Slam in the Year of Health Research". Her ticket to present in Germany's capital was a successful participation in the regional science slam for Southern Germany. Henning Beck from Ulm University, who came first in the Southern regional contest, won the national competition – also with a neuroscientific topic.

The series of events, highlighting young researchers and their work in the field of health research, was jointly organised by the "Haus der Wissenschaft" in Braunschweig and local science slam initiatives. Health research was the topic of this year's initiative by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to promote the public understanding of science in Germany.

Science Slams are contests in which researchers compete against each other in presenting their work to a lay audience. Inventiveness in conveying complex topics in clear and understandable ways, humour, and a gift for grabbing the audience's attention are the necessary prerequisites to success. Contestants only have ten minutes to present their scientific work, and the audience judges the performance by voting immediately afterwards.

Sarah already reached the national finals in another science communication event, the "FameLab", earlier this year.
